The 19th Engineers Registration Board was sworn-in on August 19, 2022 at a ceremony presided over by HW Ayebare Tumwebaze at the Ministry of Works and Transport headquarters.
Those sworn-in wereEng Isaac Mutenyo (Chairperson), Eng Namugera Ronald (Registrar), with Eng Brig Besigye Bekunda Cyrus, Eng Patricia Achola Ocan, Eng Eleanor Wozniak, Eng Tumwesigye John Kihumire and Eng Florence Lubwama Kiyimba as members.
HW Ayebare asked the eight-member Board to deal with quack engineers, increase registration turnoverof engineers and make the engineering industry visible.
He decried shoddy works noted on Isimba dam, Moroto-Nakapiripirit road and a host of collapsingbuildings, including the Lotis Tower which houses the Judicial ServiceCommission.
The Minister promised to see to it that the Ministry of Transport and Works permanent home is built up (in Entebbe) rather than operating in makeshift and squeezed space meant to be a garage for the Works department.
The Minister of Works and Transport, Hon. Gen. Katumba Wamala, who inaugurated the Board thanked the President for recognizing the special role of engineers. He urged them to ensure their presence is felt in the country.
He indicated that the Board was first established in 1969 and Dr Eng James Dikusooka was the first Chairman.
Gen Katumba called upon Engineers in Uganda to take the lead in oil and gas, road works and other infrastructure.
Eng Samson Bagonza, the Director of Engineering and Works also known as Engineer-in-Chief at the Ministry, called for a committed and disciplined team working with clear workplans and observing principles of corporate governance.
Eng Joseph Odongo asked the engineers to embrace corporate social responsibility and peer review systems in order to enhance efficiency.
The two senior engineers are former Chairpersons of the Board who were invited to mentor the new Board.
The Chairperson of the Board, who is serving his second term, Eng Mutenyo promised to be visible on the ground, enhance registration of engineers, implement the strategic plan and champion legal reforms.
The ceremony which was organized by the Works Permanent Secretary, Mr. Waiswa Bageya, was used to launch the Engineers Journal and website.
The Board's primary values are professionalism, responsibility, integrity, teamwork, innovation and excellence.
